This Raksha Bandhan: Protect the People. Protect the Data. Protect the Voice.
In HSE, communication matters. But as we adopt AI for training, narration and reporting, another question becomes equally important:
Where does our voice and workplace data actually go?
This week, let’s explore Voicebox – https://voicebox.sh/ – a free, open-source, local-first AI voice studio that runs on our own computer rather than depending on cloud processing for its core desktop functions. Voicebox states that the desktop app works offline, requires no account, and does not send recordings, voice profiles, transcripts, generated audio or settings to Voicebox servers.
🎙️ What can we practically do with it in HSE?
Create safety-training narration
We can record 10–30 seconds of our own clean voice, create a voice profile, paste an approved HSE script and generate narration
Voicebox currently provides five voice-cloning engines, with its broadest multilingual engine supporting 23 languages, including Hindi and Arabic.
Simple workflow:
Record voice → Create profile → Paste approved script → Generate → Review → Add to training
Dictate HSE observations instead of typing
Voicebox also includes local dictation.
We can speak an inspection observation, audit comment or CAPA description and have the transcript inserted into the active application.
Useful for:
Inspection notes | Safety observations | Audit comments | Draft reports | Training feedback
This could be particularly useful for professionals who spend considerable time documenting site activities.
Use ready-made voices instead of cloning
We do not necessarily need to clone anyone.
Voicebox includes 50+ preset voices through supported engines. Its lightweight Kokoro engine includes Hindi presets and can run on relatively modest hardware.
For routine HSE narration, a preset voice may actually be the simpler and more responsible option.
Is it really free?
Yes.
The desktop application is currently:

✅ Unlimited local generations and captures
✅ Voice cloning and dictation included
Optional encrypted Voicebox Cloud backup and synchronization is planned separately. Its advertised launch pricing is still provisional, so we should not treat it as final.
One practical consideration: local AI uses our own computer resources. Voicebox recommends around 16 GB RAM or more for a better experience, while model downloads can range from hundreds of MB to several GB.
⚠️ One rule we should never compromise. Voice cloning requires consent.
We should clone our own voice or use another person’s voice only with clear permission. Voicebox itself explicitly advises users to obtain permission before cloning someone.
For HSE use:

✅ Our own or authorised trainer voice
✅ Preset voices
✅ Local transcription of permitted recordings
❌ Fake management announcements
❌ Cloning colleagues without consent
❌ Fabricating emergency instructions
❌ Recording confidential conversations without authorization
Local processing improves privacy, but it does not cancel company policy, consent requirements or professional responsibility.
